Included below is a brief description about Walk In Centre and the important services they provide.
NHS Walk-in centres give you fast access to health advice and treatment. They can be used by almost anyone on a drop-in basis, and are usually open seven days a week from early morning to late evening, 365 days a year.
Walk-in centres work closely with local health services, including NHS Direct, A&E, Social Services and local primary care teams, as well as voluntary organisations. As walk-in centres operate on a local rather than national basis, some do not treat children. It is therefore worthwhile finding out whether your local centre treats children before visiting one.
To find your local walk-in centre, you can phone NHS Direct on 0845 4647 or Click on the link under Useful Links
NHS walk-in centres provide access to a range of NHS services. Experienced NHS nurses are available to treat a range of minor illnesses, such as coughs, colds and infections, as well as minor injuries like strains, sprains and cuts. They also provide information, such as the opening times and contact numbers, for all other local health services, including pharmacies, dental services and out-of-hours GP services.
NHS walk-in centres do not take the place of local GP or hospital services, they work alongside them. Not all walk-in centres offer the same services, so you should check to see which services your local centre provides. However, most centres will offer the following:
- information about local GPs, local pharmacy services and other NHS services,
- blood pressure checks,
- contraceptive advice, including providing condoms, emergency contraception and pregnancy testing
- advice and treatment for hay fever, bites and stings,
- health advice in areas such as diet, exercise and quitting smoking,
Advice on the following
- muscle and joint injuries, including strains and sprains,
- the treatment of rashes, sunburn and head lice,
- the treatment of indigestion, constipation, vomiting and diarrhoea,
- women’s health problems, such as periods and thrush, and
- men’s health problems, such as prostate enlargement.
